During the second half of the 20th century, British advertising led the world. Winston Fletcher’s new book, Powers of Persuasion, is the first history of British advertising to cover those heady times.

Presentations and Q&A will be followed by drinks and refreshments at 8.30pm.

Sir Paul’s current marketing and media interests include being the president of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), the chairman of Teachers TV, the Marketing Standards Board, the Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising and of the CAM alumni magazine and a director of Tempur-Pedic International Inc. He is a Fellow of The Marketing Society and the CIM. His initial career was with Cadbury Schweppes and Premier Brands and he was previously also a director of WPP Group plc and of The Boddington Group plc. He is a recent master of the Worshipful Company of Marketers, the City of London livery company for leaders in marketing, was chairman of the Royal Society of Arts from 2003-06 and of the IPA Marketing Effectiveness Awards in 2007.

He is also the chairman of Schroder Income Growth Fund plc, a director of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, of ENRC plc and of the Standard Bank Group Ltd in Johannesburg, South Africa and a member of the Advisory Boards for Barclays Private Bank and for Abraaj Capital of Dubai.

Winston Fletcher
chairman, Royal Institution

Winston Fletcher is chairman of the Royal Institution, of the Advertising Standards Boards of Finance and of the Knightsbridge Association. He is a vice president of the History of Advertising Trust. He is also a trustee of Barnardo’s and a director of the Rationalist Association.

His career appointments include being founder chairman of Fletcher Shelton Delaney, chairman and CEO of Ted Bates UK Group and chairman and CEO of Delaney Fletcher Bozell.

He is the only person to have been both chairman of the Advertising Association and president of the IPA, as well as a council member of the ASA, and was founder chairman of the World Advertising Research Center.

He graduated in Philosophy at Cambridge University. He has been a visiting professor in Marketing at the University of Westminster and at Lancaster University Management School and he occasionally lectures at the London Business School and City University.

He has published 13 previous books and over 3000 articles.
