Before joining the drinks company 10 years ago, Adam was the strategic planning manager at Bass plc and a vice president at Gemini Consulting, in a marketing career that began at Cadbury.

Following his presentation on winning in the drinks market, Adam will be joined in a panel discussion with industry leaders including Chris Lewis, marketing director at Wells & Young’s, the brewing company, which markets brands like Young’s, Red Stripe and Corona Extra.

Adam Martin

Adam has been marketing director of Mitchells & Butlers plc since [1999]. Previously he was strategic planning manager at Bass plc and a vice president at Gemini Consulting / The MAC group. In his consulting career Adam undertook a number of assignments with drinks producers, including South African Breweries, Bass, Guinness, Pripps Ringnes and IDV.

He started his working career as a marketing graduate trainee at Cadbury Ltd. Adam has an MBA from the London Business School and BA in Archaeology & History from the University of Leeds.

Clyde McKendrick

co-founder/ strategy director, The Open Consultancy 

Clyde McKendrick is co-founder/ Strategy Director of The Open Consultancy. An independent multi-disciplined creative agency specialising in lifestyle brand marketing. He also heads MILK a new cultural trends/ publishing business and The Open Collective a non profit Arts venture. His work with Open focuses on helping brands to build their cultural significance with consumers through positioning and creative campaign projects.

In the UK drinks sector Open have worked with Scottish & Newcastle on NPD and Kronenbourg projects, Red Bull, Jagermeister and Magners.  They also work on global projects for Bombay Sapphire and are a Pernod Ricard global roster agency working with their spirits brands.

Clyde has also worked with InBev brands during his tenure as Planning Director with Boxer/ The Marketing Store Worldwide.

He describes his career as a series of successful mistakes that led him to the realisation that he must start his own agency to find somewhere he'd fit in!


Paul Smith
marketing manager,  Wells and Youngs

Paul joined Wells and Young's in early 2008, having previously spent five years in marketing at Carlsberg. Paul's earlier career included the graduate scheme at Johnson & Johnson, and time in marketing at Sainsbury's.

Paul is now responsible for all the marketing activity across the Wells Bombardier, Courage and Young's portfolio, and is responsible for the recent launch of the groundbreaking Bombardier cask beer font.

Paul is married with a dog. In his spare time he can mostly be found cycling around the country lanes of Northamptonshire or skiing in the French alps where his parents have retired. Paul's favourite moment was England winning the Rugby world cup in 2003, and his claim to fame is that had dinner with the England team on their return to the UK the next day.
